The Looking Glass
by Allen Williams circa 1995

In the looking glass
eyes meet the silence with a glance
reflected blue in the light
rays streaming through the curtains
sprayed ungraciously upon blonde hair
noticeably unkempt
pressed to one side
left crushed by the pillow

In the looking glass
an unclaimed smile lies on the counter
next to the ring
and wristwatch strapped tightly in place
with it's hands touching each other
every hour of every day
in reassurance that there is
continuity in life
on which I can depend

In the looking glass
I place the smile upon my face
but still can't hide
for in the glass it reveals
an image of loneliness
emptiness which can only be found
in the silence between heartbeats
