Never Breakup a Pair of Aces
the book of hoyle
by Allen Williams circa 1995
The game of life I have played.
Making the best of the hands I was dealt.
Early on in life I recall not understanding
the true nature of the game or the rules.
Lessons had to be taken and lessons had to be learned.
For a while there I thought that anything could win.
That you didn't really have to try.
You didn't have to know the rules or have quality cards.
Thinking that to win was all that was important.
Then life dealt me a pair.
A pair was all I'd ever hoped for
till I received a full house which was better,
stronger and more fulfilling.
The hand I'd only dreamt of holding.
By then I thought I had learned enough lessons.
I thought I knew all the rules.
But I found life was not yet done teaching.
The lessons quickly became more intense.
Till one day I found myself holding not even a pair.
Not a hand I'd ever been dealt before.
Bust as I examine the cards more closely,
I realize I'm still holding an ace.
And when an ace is all that you have,
you discard the rest and pray for a pair.
