Nadja: Scary Story 1
by Nadja Zapasov circa 2006
While camping at El Capitan Beach, we drew words from a hat and had to construct a 'scary' story
Meal - Celery - Bat - Nose - Horns - Lava - Fire Face - Black
The ancient old Hawaiian legend of the Goddess, Pele is one of the explanations for lava spewing from their volcanos - just don't make her angry!
In the small village of Makarina on the little known mysterious island Pupaka, another frightening story had been circulating for hundreds of years...
The many caves of the island cliffs, with their black interiors, housed the mythical "Fire Face Bat", one of Pele's creatures, said to have a glowing red face and eyes - like the hot burning lava that they sprang from.
They are seen at dusk with pointy noses and long curved horns, searching for their next meal. People knew they should be in their houses before dark... because the demon bats were said to swoop down in the dark, taking bites of flesh from their victims.
The little girl was straggling behind her mother and brother. Dusk had arrived and they were late getting home to safety. Suddenly they spotted a small dark form in the sky. It was rapidly falling lower, out of the sky right towards them. They began to run but the little girl stood frozen, hypnotized by the quickly approaching bat, it's red glowing face getting close and closer.
The girl did not make a sound as the demonic looking creature zoomed toward it's target. Her Mother and Brother screamed, "Run! Run!" But she stood paralyzed and speechless as the devil-faced creature's claws snatched at her hand and flew away with her celery stick!
