The bassist had a "huge presence" in the band, which had three UK top ten singles in the early 1990s.
They were best-known for the single Unbelievable, which hit the top of the US singles chart in July 1991, having hit number three in the UK eight months earlier.
He will be remembered for being "a really funny guy" who was "always full of energy", according to Cara DeCarlo, webmaster of the EMF internet site and friend of the band.
"On stage he had a huge presence, and his basslines carried a lot of the music," she told BBC News Online.
"He was very focused on the music, and was looking forward to returning to America in 2002 to promote the upcoming release of the band's greatest hits.
The band released a greatest hits album and played a number of comeback shows in the UK in 2001.
They were preparing to release the album in the US and tour there later this year.
He always had time for his fans and "could win anybody over instantly with his wit and charm", Ms DeCarlo said.
The band formed in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, in 1989.
After Unbelievable, the band had another hit with I Believe, which went to number six in the UK, and also joined comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer for a version of I'm A Believer in 1995, which hit number three.
